A few years back, fashonistas flocked for tees with the slogan ‘Will Fuck for Shoes’. I’m not that crazy for shoes as all I wear these days are military boots or flip flops. Instead I ‘Shoot for Fashion’.

That’s exactly what I did for the Threads show during the Perth Fashion Festival this year in Fremantle. The photographs I took of Love in Tokyo were printed in the West Australian’s style insert. In return, Sheree showered me with a gift voucher which afforded me two really long singlets and a dark purple top which I’v been wearing all the time ever since.

I’m pairing the grey singlet with the purple top, a white stirling silver necklace (also, from Love in Tokyo a year or two ago) and a purple scarf (from eBay).

The dark brown singlet will be paired with a brown top (Witchery) and a red tree necklace (Elk).

Petals in Disarray gifted me with a pair of sexy skinny trousers and a singlet with its signature umbrella print. These will be super handy when I come down a size or two. Well, that is the plan for 2012.

The most exciting part I must say is what I’m getting from Megan Salmon. The dark purple tulle skirt will soon be in my possession. It’s not often that I get to wear something off the runway. I went for the fitting today and, of course, it didn’t fit me so Megan is having to alter it.

I used to wear dresses although it feels like it never happened. It wasn’t all that long ago when I used to wear Costarella’s huge dress with a bit of oomph. It turned out it was only April 2010. Since then I ‘grew side ways’ so I’m not able to wear this dress any more. Hopefully, my New Year’s resolution might just have to work out. Should I get my hair cut short as well?!

There you have it. I shoot to get paid but I also shoot for fashion so you’re more than welcome to dress me. Are you game?

It’s no secret that I wear a lot of black. I’m not very adventurous when it comes to ‘playing with colours’. As I haven’t done much Dressing Songy lately I thought I should give you something entertaining.

Here I’m wearing a Sass & Bide jacket, a Petals in Disarray tank, Witchery trews and Jump leather boots. Of course, all neatly black. I don’t know how to introduce this next photo. It just says it all really. I look like a kid – my inner childishness all trying to burst out.

Could you guess who dressed me this time? Here I’m sporting Zozatron, Zoe Trotman’s Lonely 8-bit Heroes. I don’t know of any other label that can make me look so … ummm Fresh. If an old bag like me can look this ‘fresh’ there must be some special magic in this crazy prints by our Zoza.

I first met Zoe exactly year ago while I was going around interviewing Bently Swan TAFE (aka polytechnic west or WAIFT) students. I wasn’t quite sure back then how this ‘out there’ designer – Zoe describes her design ‘cringe worthy’ – could continue bring out something cohesive and commercially viable. To my surprise, her collection at StyleAID 2010 was very interesting and I can see that there is a definite commercial appeal. Only thing remaining is turning her handmade goodies into mass produceable products. As uninteresting as it may sound that is really the only way designers can continue to create interesting pieces – making money.

What I think really interesting is her approaches to modify regular shoes to create something spectacular. These polkadot heels are something to admire. I truly believe this will sell if it’s packaged well with a matching dress. Only thing is finding an investor and a shoe manufacturer. Easy! (so NOT).

This was the matching dress at the parade a few days ago at StyleAID. Would you wear this dress? There were quite a few people who coveted it. Can you see the prints inside the dress? Is that crazily awesome?

I’ve never tried tights this fun before. These will be for available to purchase as part of Popsicle – Perth Fashion Festival 2010. If you want to grab a pair before anyone else just go over to Zozatron at Etsy – contact Zoe via Convo in Etsy and ask for the Australian prices as they are all in USD at the moment.

Zoe and I had a fabulous time dressing me with something I’ve never tried in my entire life – lots of colours, trimmings and prints. I must admit I didnt’ look too bad. It’s just that I can’t remain serious and miserable (my natural state) wearing Lonely 8-bit Heroes. It’s a happy and fun label – odd or cringe worthy.. whatever you call it Zoe would be happy.

While I was basking in her creative warmth and energy I was wondering what it takes to bring this kind of creative designer into the fickle world of fashion and help her survive. That discussion is for another day. Have a look at other photos from our fun dressing day.

I never used to wear anything this strange yet spectacular. Looking back what I used to wear, this is way more interesting.

This is what I bought at Periscope in King Street when they were having a summer clearance sale a couple of weeks ago. When I picked it up, it was just a giant rectangle. I took if off from the sales rack and tried it on. The sales lady at the shop was saying ‘Not many people can pull it off. you can’t have big boobs or long hair. That’s why it’s going at such a bargain price. Blah Blah’. She failed to tell me that it suited me. I had to help her out by adding at the tail end of her comment ‘Do you think I’m pulling it off okay?’. ‘Oh Yeah!’. Sorry but I thought ‘you could do better than that, lady’. Oh well, either way, it’s a cool dress and I think I look okay in it. I would have bought it regardless of what she thought or said anyhow.

Alistair Trung is a cool designer. The rectangle’s top ends fold up to cover my shoulders and create lovely ruffles. This shirt dress (if you could call it that) is warm enough for cooler months. I just need a pair of those cropped tights or leggings with boots. I just need to wrap myself around with some cool scarf. Now all set for Autumn. Perth’s Autumn that is – 25C and nice and sunny.

I’ve been lazy about bringing back Dressing Songy. It really just started out as me rummaging around my wardrobe to see how I could re-vitalise my ‘style life’ with your help. Presenting a pair of shoes and challenging you to come up with outfits to match was great fun when I had tons of time for this website. That original concept soon became not so viable. One big issue was funding new pairs of shoes. That was nearly solved by Betts. They were happy to help but shoes are not the only problem. Time and my wardrobe. Of course, the original format of Dressing Songy still remains and I’ll sooner or later present with ‘new challenges’. For the new year, however, I had a better and more fun idea. How about getting emerging designers to dress me! Getting someone else to dress me is such a hoot. Don’t you think? I don’t claim to be the most stylish person I know. Far from it really. The idea came to me when I started noticing some amazing local talent. Let me be honest, it came from my greed. The greed to try all that is fabulous, amazing and handmade by fellow Aussies. Sure, I don’t get to own any of it (except one thing out of this post) but I can assure you I don’t want everything I see and try anyway. That’s good and bad. This gives me chance to try the things I’d never try on my own.

It wasn’t terribly difficult to choose first few designers I wanted to work with. Luckily, I was able to catch Ellie Meyer before she runs away to Melbourne for the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival (she is one of two WA students to participate along with Daniella Caputi). As you know she is also one of three students selected at PFF09 to work in a special studio in the city to present a special collection this year too. Quite a special lady then to open a new season of dressing Songy.

I turned up at Ellies place in Fremantle one evening last week carrying a huge bag of shoes and basic stuff. She chose my long witchery boots and sportsgirl slip then the adventure began.

Ellie is a quiet but funny girl. She is into making garments which are wearable multiple ways. Have a look at this special vest I bought from her at Unwrapped 09 in Leederville. I can wear this in four different ways – up and down both inside and outside. Even after Ellie ‘dressed’ me with it I haven’t quite worked out how but I did wear them in all different ways as you can see in the photos. The multiple way thing wasn’t really my attraction at first. I really liked how cleverly patterns were cut and put together. I asked her what her usual approach is with garment design. Her simple answer was ‘draping first and pattern making next’. You know the usual way of garment making right? Pattern making, cutting and putting them on a dress making dummy. Not that it is ground breaking as I know of quite a few designers using that very method but they don’t always come out with fantastically clever designs. Do you see the necklace I’m wearing there? That’s Ellies’ new creation and you can buy them at the Form Gallery shop in Murray Street in Perth.

There’s another example of ‘multiple ways’ dress. I nearly bought that dress but I secretly want both of them (puffy and up and down dress). Apart from the purest greed of mine – wanting to try out designer fashion – it is interesting to see how what we saw on runway can be worn by a regular girl like me. you know what I mean? These pieces were shown both at the Perth Fashion Festival 2009 and Homeground Curtin graduate show 2009. Of course they were worn by tall, skinny and stunning models. I’m a size 10 regular girl with not so long legs etc…etc the bottom line is I haven’t got any quality that models got so if garments work on me any regular people should be able to pull them off. When Ellie was dressing me it felt quite effortless yet special.

Ellie is still not sure about the name Prufrock for her label. Whatever she decides to call it in the future I do hope that she continues her design with her signature inquisitiveness and frankness. That’s an amazing quality to have in the so called fashion world.

I dare say this has been a very successful launch of Dressing Songy 2.0. I’ll be back with more of interesting and sometimes predictable Songy’s favourite designs by local designers soon.

By the way, the satin heels giveaway is still happening. I’m really giving a winner a pair of brand-new heels from Betts. It’s not that difficult to enter either so go on and ‘get engaged’!
