Perth Fashion Festival 2010 – Program Launch Invitation
It is happening. Yes, indeed. There were rumours and concerns but it’s official and I’ve received an invite to the program launch breakfast next week. I hope this time they’ll have the website and the program all ready online for the actual launch. Last year, the program wasn’t readily available so I had to scan the program and put it up for people. Boo. Well, this time I have a decent scanner so if they don’t get around to it I’ll be able to upload a reasonable copy I hope.
I don’t want to be all doom and gloom about this but I don’t know if PFF will be happening next year. Everybody I talk to wouldn’t say anything bad about the festival but they wouldn’t necessarily associate themselves with it either. For a start, I know quite a few WA local designers decided not to participate in this year’s festival.
One other thing I found strange was the arrangement for the student designer winners. During the last year’s WA fashion awards three student designers were chosen for a special opportunity to work in a studio in the city to create a collection for this year’s show. I found out later on – by accident – that the studio was in fact a space which used to be a retail shop in Carillon City. That was a bit of a disappointment for me. Yeah, totally selfish this is. I haven’t spoken with any of those designers. It may well be perfect for them but what I had in mind was a proper designers’ studio with rustic brick walls with high ceiling and steel beams etc.. not a retail space in the middle of a shopping centre. That said, it may well be perfect for the PR.
I’ve seen the festival as a spectator and part of media. I’ve been able to connect with models and designers (new and established). It’s great fun for general public but I don’t know if the WA fashion industry is all that thrilled about it. I don’t know if the PFF organisers know what their sentiment is towards the festival. Regardless, the festival will happen and I’ll have a jolly good time.
I should really have a quick squeeze at the Carton – the studio for in the city.
