Josh Goot fashion talk was the very last fashion talk for this year. Organised by Fremantle Arts Centre, it has been the most surprisingly informative and pleasant experience attending Fashion Talks. I had to skip one but I attended Antipodium, Akira and Josh Goot which was on tonight. It was a bit of cold night to be outside considering my bronchitis but it was well worth it. Yes, I had it since September and it hasn't gone away yet.
I assume any Style Discovery reader will know who Josh Goot is but just to briefly explain... he started out in 2005 with clothes made with cotton jersey with very simple and clean aesthetics - jackets, coats, tee etc etc. Four years on, he is world famous so let's find out more.
Josh Goot studied marketing and communications briefly and went into making printed tee-shirts. That essentially paved the road to come up with the 2005 collection below. It was quite a logical step for him I suppose. He knew the fabric, he had plenty of them in stock. He's been always into street wear and he wanted to do something different - not liking what's out there called 'fashion' at the time. Also, remembering what the year 2005's fashion scene was like, Josh Goot's collection was incredibly fresh just like his name. Jo Pickup - the interviewer - asked him about his little Israeli military training - he is jewish - whether that helped him to survive in the fashion industry. We just laughed.
Anyway, interesting thing for all of us, the audience, was how candid Josh Goot was in answering all Jo's questions. Although he couldn't always find right words quickly but when he did we all got (quite well) what he meant. I could see that he has a clear vision and true to himself on all his work (at least he is continuously trying).
He was asked how he handled the exponential growth in his first year. His answer was simply 'not managed at all'. Very honest! According to him, some good advice was given along with bad ones. Bad decisions were made and mistakes followed. They didn't know what they were doing then. We all had a good laugh from his story but it was amazing that after all that travesty he and his team survived. Not only they are planning on a new label Goot which will bring back his signature jersey style garments but also we'll see an online store by Josh Goot soon. Very good news for some of us who don't have easy access to his design here in WA.
Oh do you see his bare feet? He walked on the stage like that. His answer was he couldn't find shoes he liked. Fair enough. I didn't realise the scale of Josh Goot operations. He is pretty well known in Australia and worldwide but he has a team of 6-7. That's it. All production is handled in Sydney. He is ambitious though. Rightly so. He doesn't mind getting compared to Calvin Klein. When the timing is right and there's enough financial backing we'll see Josh Goot everything -makeup, fragrance, leather goods, watch etc etc.
I can see that the label has been crafted so well that it will work with in platform. I do hope that he achieves what he sets out to do. With his tenacity, I'm sure he will manage that and more. That was today's lesson I guess. Stick to what you love and be true to yourself (at least try!)
I must thank Fremantle Arts Centre for organising these fabulous talks. Also big hugs and thanks to Jo Pickup for intelligent and entertaining talks. Finally, Renne Glastonbury from La La Orange for getting me into the talks. I'm now hooked. When is the next series on? 2010? Dang...
P.S. I know some of you are waiting for some photos/posts - market news (unwrapped, upmarket, Bazaar 09 and more), graduation shows (Central TAFE, Polytechnic West - aka Swan TAFE) and Scene Model presentation. All these are coming. Sorry folks. I just can't keep up because I don't do this full time although some of you might have thought otherwise. Cheers and good night!
