I haven't had much to do with Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts until now. We know that Hugh Jackman and late Heath Ledger studied there. I was given opportunities to interview some of the costume design students from WAAPA earlier on as part of the Perth Fashion Festival 09 but I never managed to do so. Logistically very difficult to mobilise students from three or four different schools while holding a full time job etc.. etc same ol' story I suppose.
Anyhoo, I was able to meet some students from WAAPA as part of the festival and, as a result, I received an invitation to the opening night of the graduate exhibition for 2009. Yeepee. You would think that there should be a parade of some sort. Remember though there's more to theatre design than just costume.
The gallery exhibition was a perfect format for set, prop and costume design students to showcase their work from WAAPA. It was actually much more intriguing than I initially expected. I specially liked the conceptual processes (drawings and photo documentary) and set designs. It was also fun seeing those garments I saw at the festival up close.
Of course, the night such as this cannot be completed without some 'cool people spotting'. The exhibition runs until Friday so you can make your way down there if you're out and about in the city. It's at the Parmelia Hilton building.

Very cool. I love it when people's work comes together like that. I know nothing about the behind-the-scenes processes that these kinds of designers go through, so this was a great treat. Thanks for featuring it, Songy!
