Home Ground – Curtin 2009 graduate parade

Cleverly titled, fashion, textile & jewellery 2009 Curtin graduates’ parade , Home Ground – and the show was held at the Curtin Stadium, was one hell of fashion show. It was over an hour long jam packed with 21 students distinctive collections.

Sweet, grungy, mysterious, neat and scary, we had them all. I think there were more industry guests than any other shows I’ve attended so far. That obviously says something about the calibre of Curtin graduates.

There were quite a few moments during the show when some impressed industry guests were bursting into clapping and cheering (not from friends or family…). That’s how spectacular the show was.

Interestingly enough, backstage was equally impressive. It was quite well organised unlike other graduate shows. I later found out the reason why. Some of the students caught ‘Aly bug’. Well, by now, you’d know Aly May – Perth’s own Anna Wintour without viciousness. She is the pioneer of catwalk fashion in Perth and the most well respected stylist and parade choreographer. Anyway, some of the graduates have worked for Aly for STYLEAID so they knew a thing or two about getting a show organised.

I enjoyed the show immensely and I think they were all excellent but I did have my favourites for different reasons.

Kate Townsend’s layering, form and structure.

Kimberly Gouges’ elven dresses. They reminded me of elves from the Lord of the Rings. Don’t you think these are elvish?

These are really groovy but I must confess. I had a major girl crush when I first saw Hannah Farleigh. She is wearing a handed knitted dress. Who would like to make one of those for me?!

Sarah Munday’s rope designs were very grippy. oh hoho.. sorry but I did like them ropes.

Elizabeth West (aka Libby)’s ‘sexy’ school uniforms were rather daring and interesting. Well, maybe not quite ‘sexy’ but they are definitely funky.

Emma Pullbrook managed to mix funk, girly romance and sophistication all at the same time. It’s a fine balancing act. That’s is why it’s so brilliant.

I think i’ve shown you enough in one post. I’ll continue maybe tomorrow….
