I have to credit my guy for this post. He feeds me with all kinds of interesting articles (personal media filter?) and informs me the artists' names when I hear popular songs on the wireless. I really don't know the names of so called famous people. To be registered in my brain, so called celebs have to be mega famous or notorious. i.e. Victoria Beckham, Paris Hilton and the likes. So I come clean here. I don't know any of the girls in these photos barring just a couple.
When I read the article named 'They don't make 'em like they used to' by the Vine the first thing that came to me was how trashy today's celebs look. I then quickly realised that we might be looking at a typical case of 'comparing apples and oranges' though. How could one compare Sophia Lauren with Kim Kardashian (I don't even know what this Kim lady does)? Would you agree?
- Brigitte Bardot vs Tara Reid
- Marilyn Monroe vs Paris Hilton
- Faye Dunaway vs Bai Ling
- Sophia Lauren vs Kim Kardashian
- Lauren Bacall vs PhoebePrice
- Ingrid Bergman vs Jordan
I guess the author of the article was merely saying how stylish our starlettes were back in the old days and how modern day celebs look anything like them. I wonder then what people will say 50 years later looking at the stars of the curernt time and comparing with that of 2059. It could be that they might consider the current time as 'dark ages' and don't even bother with the painful exercise of comparison.. just the way I don't regard 80s as even worth mentioning in my blog*.
I could have just enjoyed the seemingly entertaining article and cleverly collated photos. Instead, this lead me to have scattered thoughts and gave me the feeling of uneasiness. Now I'm passing this to you. You can just enjoy the silly comparison or think about the contexts in which these photos were taken or the notion of stylish vs trashy. Don't tell me that I never make you think.
- Marlene Dietrich vs Britney Spears
- Audrey Hepburn vs Coco
- Hane Russell vs Pussycat Doll
- unknown
- Mae West vs Jodie Marsh
- Grace Kelly vs Shaune Sand
*Disagree if you will. I cannot personally pull off anything from the 80s hence not talking about it. It's my predicament I suppose.

a couple of thoughts off the top of my head (warning, if i don't make sense, it's because it's past midnight for me) - i think the comparisons are not even because those in the trashy column for the most part are not the modern-day equivalents of the "stars" of the past whom they are being compared to.
i think every era has B (C, and D) level celebrities but those aren't usually the ones who are remembered. hepburn hepburn, becall, etc. endure. the images of the talentless publicity junkies of the past will not be circulated so it makes it seem like they did not exist (there is a lesson here for the modern-day talentless publicity junkies).
that being said, i do think there is an unfortunate appetite/demand for junk, and so it is being promoted.
@editor (up and down town)
Oh god I love you. You put it so succinctly.
well id say fashion and whats so called sexy has changed over the years so its normal but those images used are on the extreme side of trashy! hehe but then again certain ppl were used to cant blame the trashiness(if that makes sense) x
Ahhh Audrey vs. Coco? That's blasphemy! Haha these comparisons did make me laugh. I'm really tired though, so I can't come up with as intelligent things to say as "up and down town" - you put it so well! It is definitely comparing apples and oranges...

This is a great post Songy!!!!
Lots of insights to think about. Yes there are so trashy (in my opinion) pictures these days....
Where's the elegance and style?????
Hmmmm... just have to say that I think the 80's if you take back the excesses weren't that bad, and we can learn with and now do it better, maybe it's because I'm a girl from the 80's....
xoxo
hello dear, think this post was so well put.
what i will say is even the notion of celebrity has changed.
Back in the day those stars were celebrated for laudable talents such as lustrous singing talent or amazing acting prowess.
we've become this throw away society who want a new celeb each day and most of them are celebs for no reason.what happened to folk being celebrated for awesome talent?
A person become a celeb for just sitting around in a house and winning(big brother) or for winning some show about becoming Paris hilton's new house mate.
Now we live in a more mediocre society where average or non at all is good often. so we have average talented(some with no talent all together ;o) high profile people who are using their bodies to keep them in the press. So if Jordan,jOdie marsh etc did strip off each time for the cameras or wear classy clothes who'd write about them?they have no other mentionable talents worth writing home about about.
Kim kardashian is an IT girl, girl about town whose known for her many escapades and flings with men in hiphop, majort sports leagues etc and who occasionally glamour models.
Ingrid Bergman,Lauren Bacall,Sophia Loren,Hepburn cant even be compared to the likes of Paris,Kim,Jodie etc as there is no comparision. Thats comparing talent to no talent. I always say i dont blame these talentless stars,i blame society my dear. If we did not buy the gossip mags about the latest celeb with her boob hanging out her dress,or the latest shenanigan by some no talent person they would have no careers.Andy warhol did say in the future everyone woud be famous for 15 mins :O)
great post dear, sorry for rambling on but it was a subject close to my heart.

marian
good post.
and The House Of Style - you have absolutely right!
Interesting juxtapositions here . . . it is a shame that the skankiest of ladies often get the most attention in Hollywood.
Fortunately, there are LADIES still out there, like Kate Winslet, Nicole Kidman, Calista Flockart, Catherine Zeta-Jones, etc...
Interesting post, Songy!

To carry on from this theme, I just read a great book about the "new female chauvinist". I can't remember the title of it right now though (and I just lent the book to a friend).
OK, I'm with editor on this, but your post really made me do a double-take. The louche, unartful way in which so many tier B/C/D media figures are portraying themselves these days is disturbing.
Great post you got here. I do believe that despite associating myself with the current goings-on that my generation is supposed to consume my heart beats for anything old school! Trashy is something that is devastatingly going out of control. I seriously need a break from the likes of Kim Kardashian, Victoria Beckham, etc. haha
In other words, I would without a doubt prefer the likes of Bardot to Bergman vs those trashy starlets! And this is one of the reasons why I can't get enough of the past!
I agree with other posters that there is no comparison. I saw another magazine article that compared A Listers to these classic stars and it was gorgeous-I wish I had saved that.
very compelling post!
I adore stars of the old Hollywood. However, I think the Vine is really using extreme case of modern day bad celebs vs. the extreme case of good old Hollywood.
I do think the examples are extreme ref modern days but how the starlets of old lord it over the Hollywood stars and top models of today.
Au secours!
The girls on the right are so weird! It's scary to imagine that celebrities are supposed to be a reflection of the world we live in...
Heureusement, les filles de gauche sont magnifiques!
I think the article is comparing apples to oranges. Audrey Hepburn vs Coco??? That's a bit ridiculous. One classy lady that comes to mind is Cate Blanchett.
The '80s might have been ugly but they were fun. I miss 'em!
you know these girls wont be remembered 20 years from now. because of their lack of any sort of talent, people will lose interest with tabloid fodder, when their IT factor dies.
i think 20 years from now we'll still be looking at pictures of angelina jolie & brad pitt, cate blanchett, denzel washington, etc...
Oh God! It is so sad to watch most celebrities try too hard which ends up in plain vulgarity.
this is amazing, and so true. its kind of hard hitting, like a wake up call how disgusting our media can get by even putting those images out there. really awesome post.x
What an interesting article. I agree - no comparison. I'm not sure if it is about stylish vs. trashy or what we now come to accept and somehow worship in the media. If they did that back then people would be appalled...now we just say oh ok...another trashy looking famous girl...what's new? I guess the best way is to stand out, be different, cover up and be stylish!
Great post. That picture of Tara Reid's exposed boob was quite disturbing for some reason. Ick. All the women on the right side were ICK--no class whatsoever. I do agree with Couture Carrie--I think that Cate Blanchett and Kate Winslet are more comparable to old Hollywood stars. I adore those two.
Eurgh I hate when newspapers and the media try to compare these new fame hungry 'celebrities' with the beautifully talented and wonderful stars of old. They all seem to be after publicity and don't care how they get it, the unfortunate thing is, is that although we may recognise a face or name for a short amount of time, before long we have forgotten them and they go back to being nobodies. I for the life of me can't work out how someone like Tara Reid or Kim K is a 'celebrity'...what have they done lol?!!
That's such lazy journalism... the thing is it's a completely different era altogether.... why bother even comparing them...
I look at this and think, "who would you rather be?" And some people wonder why I'm into vintage style!
Really like the way 'up and down town' put it.
Happy New Year, Songy!
xo
stylish vs trashy?
I believe we need both of them! Imagine trashy is missing?
I am not trashy but i like it sometimes! In fashion is all ok like it is in love and war!
Happy New Year! La multi ani! That's how we say it
Lorena
Great post - you made me think (as usual)!
Urgh, just looking at those photos made me realise how trashy some of our modern day celebrities! I'd welcome a return to old school classic style any day, actually, I'd welcome a return to any style other than 'tits and PVC'.
Great post
x
Those aren't very fair comparisons. Compare to Angelina Jolie and real great *actresses* today (versus socialites) and the contrasts aren't so vast.
