WAIFT 2008 Introducing Leanne Lim
Introducing Leanne Lim
- Inspiration – Where did they get the initial couture and RTW concept from?
The inspiration for my couture collection was antique bird cages and tropical birds, like the bird of paradise. I took elements such as colour, texture and line from this. So my couture range was all about a mix of vibrant colours, and it was also about having something structured with strong lines and contrasting this with something beautiful, soft and flowing. My yellow gown reminds me of a beautiful bird trapped in a steel cage.
- What made you to study fashion? Why at Swan TAFE?
I finished a degree in computer science and realised that I didn’t want to work in an office, so I travelled around the US to procrastinate finding a job
In LA I met a guy who owned a store on Melrose Ave and I decided that I wanted to own a boutique one day, or have my own label, so I came home and applied for TAFE. I actually went to Central TAFE for a year and a half and quit because I didn’t like the course there. After that, I did some work experience at Costarella Designs and the girls there told me that the course at Bentley TAFE was really good so I enrolled there. - What’s happening now since the show?
I’m trying to sell my range as well as other random dresses that I’ve made. Yesterday I sold my range to a new boutique that is opening up in Mt Hawthorne, I think it will be called Alla Moda Chanelle, but I’m not entirely sure about that. It opens up first week of February.
Other than that, I’ve had a couple of orders for my couture and I’ve had some people ask me to make them other dresses.
- What’s your long term plan?
If things go well, hopefully be running a successful label. Maybe participate in some fashion weeks.
- Do you have a web site or a blog?
I’m working on my website right now, so it should be up and running late Jan. In the mean time I can be contacted via email -leanne_lim@hotmail.com
- What would you do differently if you have to start all over again?
Nothing. I think that if I started this course earlier, I wouldn’t be as motivated as I am now. The other courses that I’ve done in the past have prepared me for the future.
- Your favorite Australian designer(s)?
I love Alex Perry. I think he’s amazing!
- Your favorite place(s) to shop in Perth?
Swarovski! haha I love bling! I don’t shop much for clothes.
As the winner of Student Designer Award for Perth Fashion Festival 2008 she has already sold her designs and she is set to become one of the prominent WA designers. I expect to see you next September at the festival, Leanne. Maybe I will smile when we take a photo again together.
