WAIFT 2008 – Introducing Kimmye Wong
Still continuing the designer showcases from WAIFT Graduation 2008 Show. I pick up the coverage with Kimmye who is very grounded and thoughtful. Here I had to dig out my not-so-great photos (in the middle) so that you can see some of the details of her dresses. I really liked her couture line with a limited colour palette which was nicely controlled but still vibrant and elegant.
Introducing Kimmye Wong
- Inspiration – Where did they get the initial couture and RTW concept from?
My inspiration was traditional Japan. I was attempting to replicate how a kimono works ie. just using one length of fabric to make a garment, use of folds and pleats, as well as keeping it minimalist with as less seams as possible. I was also fascinated by this pic of a Japanese temple by a lake, I really loved this juxtaposition between structure and drape and tried to install that aesthetic in every piece. the colours stem from this, I was using rustic, organic colours to give my collection a natural feel.
- What made you to study fashion? Why at Swan TAFE?
I didn’t know what I wanted to do until yr 12 really, but I figured a huge passion of mine was for shopping and kinda fell into fashion from there. I was advised by my art teacher that TAFE was a better bet than uni and she recommended swan tafe. I was a bit worried as I ‘d never touched a sewing machine until I started the course but they teach u everything from scratch which was great for me.
- What’s happening now since the show?
We’ve still got tafe atm but I confess I’m in no hurry to work and haven’t been proactive in finding one. I’ve got big plans to travel next yr and may put off finding a ‘real’ job until then. All I want to do is chillax and read a book! after all the stress and sleep deprivation we’ve gone through I’m not in the mood to party (yet!!).
- What’s your long term plan?
Haven’t got one yet.
- Do you have a web site or a blog?
No.
- What would you do differently if you have to start all over again?
If I could do things differently I would definitely have tried to managed my time better! ahh hindsight!
- Your favorite Australian designer(s)?
I don’t have favourite designers, I think they’re all great and aspire to reach their level.
- Your favorite place(s) to shop in Perth?
I don’t have favourite stores either! I just like whatever fits well and mix n match depending on my mood.

December 10, 2008Lovely collection, and lovely interview as well! I definately (sp) see the Japanese inspiration in this collection!
And thanks for you’re comment, I’m a bit jealous you had such an inspiring boss, probably because I’m dealing with a verbally abusive boss who I think could really take home the “Worst Boss Ever” award!
Anyway, hope you are well!
