WAIFT 2008 Introducing Bridget Tighe by Bridget Cumberworth

Posted by on Dec 6, 2008 in 2008, Graduate shows

When I talk about fashion I approach it mostly in a practical sense hence my silly jokes around ‘unwearable’ RTW pieces. When I saw Bridget Tighe’s Couture Collection however my attitude changed. They were wearable art. Very wearable indeed. Bridget’s RTW collection is sexy with elegant hues. I don’t know how she managed.

One interesting aspect of interviewing these young designers was finding out how I was actually learning little life lessons from them. I’m sure I will spill them all out to you sooner or later.

Introducing Bridget Tighe by Bridget Cumberworth

WAIFT Cumberworth Couture
  1. Inspiration – Where did they get the initial couture and RTW concept from?

My inspiration was fueled from a landscape painting of Ohura by Bryan Woodhead, its of a small place in N.Z where I grew up, January this year I went back for a visit and design ideas came streaming in, when I saw the painting I new it was going to inspire my whole collection.

  2. What made you to study fashion? Why at Swan TAFE?

I’m not sure what made me want to study fashion.. pretty sure I was born with the passion. my year 7 year book states I want to be a fashion designer!! I think I picked Bentley when I was about 14, I heard it was the best haha, I did sway in year 12 towards Central after studying TEE ART, but I ended up going to Bentley. I wouldn’t change it, I’ve loved Bentley!!

  3. What’s happening now since the show?

Partying…. well working myself up to party, sadly I haven’t actually had a big night out yet.. my grandpa’s 80th is this sunday though, so that should be pretty wild ;) I’m doing a few one off’s for people who liked things in my collection, and a few new designs for a couple of girls.. apart from that I’m shooting my resume everywhere I can, trying to get an industry job..

  4. What’s your long term plan?

long term plans.. become insanely famous!! NNoooo I want to travel and explore.. see what’s really out there before I start a label. when I do stat my own label I would like to be long lived and successful.

  5. Do you have a web site or a blog?

    No.

  6. What would you do differently if you have to start all over again?

hmmmm what would I do differently.. this has been on my mind a lot I have to say… I’m not entirely sure i would do anything differently, my range is who I was when I was designing it.. I put everything I had into it, it’s so easy to question it now when my biggest decision is cereal or toast for breakfast.. but at the time you do what you can.. knowing that it’s the best you can do at that moment… so I wouldn’t change anything, but I do know what I’ll do differently for my next collection.

  7. Your favorite Australian designer(s)?

My fave aussie designers are… Nicola Finetti, Life with Bird & camilla and marc

  8. Your favorite place(s) to shop in Perth?

Would it be a crime to say I’m not the biggest fan of shopping? But I LOOOOOVVE op shopping, put me in a dusty shop of old treasures, and I could sort through it all day, my favourite pieces are secondhand or home made!! though ask me that question in a year or two when I haven’t been studying and can actually afford to shop :)

Bridget, I was very impressed with your attitude toward your current collection and your aspiration. Go and become insanely famous.

the top looks are very romantic while the bottom row has a more edgy sexy feel. It’s definitely workable. I love the color palette and the center dress at the bottom.

I’m going to say “partying” whenever anyone asks me my future plans from now on. That’s brilliant.

Wow, I’m so surprised most of this designers don’t have a website! It’s quite a common occurance that creative people lack the business mindset.
