The New Year is fast approaching and I decided to take a little trip down the memory lane.
At the turn of the century* I was living in Hong Kong. That was a couple of years after HK became a Chinese SAR (Special Administrative Region) and also just after HK government moved the crazy Kai Tak Airport in an urban jungle (single runway amongst apartment blocks... imagine the thrill of landing!) to the current international airport.
Shopping being one of the national sports for the HK Chinese people it was inevitable to get the shopping fever whenever there was a big queue of people trying to get into shops.
The one place that I cannot forget is Shanghai Tang. Situated in the historic Pedder Building in Central it was the place to soak up the air of old imperial China with a modern twist. After a super fast MTR trip down to Central, when I stepped into the Pedder Building the time had stopped and I was in a different world. The smell, colours and music all sent me to the era which I can only experience in movies.
Fast forward four years. I visited Shanghai Tang in Paris near St. Sulpice in 2004. It was this time of the year. People were rugged up and kids were enjoying icy slopes artificially created by the city council. I must admit it wasn't quite the same walking into the boutique in Paris but I still enjoyed everything that Shanghai Tang had to offer: the quality, craftsmanship and design.
If you happen to own an item from Shanghai Tang you would know that it's not Made in China rather it is Made by Chinese.
What could I expect in 2008? Lots. I can even shop online. Granted, it is not the same as walking into Pedder Building. This is good old East meets West plus all trendy stuff. : ombre, knits, hobo bags, studs, adorned trench, barocade.. how about a quilted leather jacket!
I would do anything to go back there. So it happens there is Hong Kong Fashion Week for Fall/Winter in January 12-15. One of the photographers I know will be there to shoot. Wish I had his job.
*In my book it was 1999 ticking over to 2000.
P.S. Being a total lazy ass I'm I didn't bother to wish you all Happy Holidays. While I'm preparing for the Lord of the Rings Trilogy marathon over the New Year's break I won't be so active. After all, it's over 12 hours long and we will definately attempt to watch all appendix DVDs as well. Anyways, happy holidays and hopefully catch you all in the New Year! Love always. Songy

Wow! I had no idea that chinese fashion was so original. You hear about Prada, Chanel and YSL opening boutiques in Shanghai and Beijing but you don't imagine the local designs are just as good.
I am off to Singapore for a quick stopover on the way to Aus, in about 24 hours and I am now wishing I had the freedom to wander around Orchard Road and into some of the big department stores. Instead I will be heading for Sentosa, The monorail and The zoo.
ah well.
Happy New Year Songhee!
xx
@Hammie! I knew you were traveling but didn't know when. Sentosa will be lovely. :) I'm sure there will be a big shopping mall even in Sentosa knowing Singapore.
Come to think of it.. there are Shanghai Tang boutiques in Terminal 2 and 3 in Singapore!
xoxo
너의 site 아주 재미있는데, 너의 안목을 통해 새로운 세계를 알게 된다. 건강하렴. 내년도~
Ooooh, that bottom left photo = extra awesomeness.
I also had no idea of this gorgeous fashion style.
Thank you for sharing!
Made by Chinese instead of Made in China is something very interesting and selective, I like it.
Have a Gorgeous and Happy New Year, my dear!!!!
xoxo
is it rinko kikuchi !!? wow stunnin
Beautifully edited post, Songy! Love the blue dress and quilted coat, and what you said about shopping being a HK national sport - funny!
Hope your holiday is truly fab, darling!
xoxox,

You gotta love Mao waving his cigarette. The first time I was in Hong Kong was several months before the handover. A very interesting time!
Hey Songy- Thank you! :) Happy HOlidays x
How is Australia's weather treating you? Well, I hope. :)
You have no idea how much I loved this post, Songy.
I'm in my hotel room in Paris now about to go to sleep... and your post was the perfect thing to read.
My husband is a huge LOTR fan. Not only do we own all the LOTR movies but I think he buys every new edition that comes out hoping for new extra features...
Have an awesome 2009, Songy :-)))
oo, i like those handbags
happy holidays! I finally had a chance to sit down and comment back, so just wanted to say thanks for the comment on wewearthings!
wow you have a 28-70mm f/2.8! I'm jealous! I blew all my money on my new camera, so my most expensive lens is still my 18-200mm VR lens. My other "fashion" lens I typically use for my shots is my 20mm f/2.8. I was thinking about the f/1.4, but I couldn't justify it since I already have the 50mm f/1.8.
Hmmm as for my photos looking worn... I think it's because my clothes are old, not the photo :((((((
haha
I love a woman who tells us what she was doing at the turn of the century! I was waiting to have a baby :-) - far less glamorous to be sure! And I do love how the merch is labelled "Made by Chinese". How respectful!
i think i have visited the store in hk... it has been a while.
Happy Holidays to you too, Songy! You sound like you've lived in the most magical places (magical for the shopping alone, but other reasons too)! Hope you have fun with your trilogy-watching - that sounds like a perfect way to ring in the new year!
i'm heading to HK next week! love the shopping there - actually love the city:) can't wait! have never been to shanghai tang but i might have to track it down. i always love bringing home a few souvenirs - that aren't clothes?!
Oh wow those pieces are beautiful!! And I do adore that orange presentation box. Hope you have fun with the trilogy marathon, I remember sitting in the cinema for the last one and getting up around four times...that film refused to end!
Hi, Songy! HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Love that blue dress, wonderful! I hope you are having a nice holiday!

Wow, but those watched are awesome. I love that stuff - I lived in Taiwan for a year and a half and their sense of humour about all things mainland is, um, not there.
I would love to travel more one day. Great post! I would love to go to Hong Kong maybe after I graduate.

I just bought a pair of jeans where the tag says "Made in The People's Republic of Mainland China"
I really like that orange box. Simple and beautiful. And the beauty of the engravings on the back of the watch. I think i would like this store A LOT. i am in love with that trench coat and the quilted and embroidered jacket.
Happy new year!
Great post! And such interesting pieces.
P.S. Hehe seeing "Shanghai Tang" reminded me of the old HK TV series starring Chow Yun Fat. Must go find the theme song to listen to...
I was wondering if any one can tell me how much the watch in the third picture down waving a cigarette is worth? My grand father just left one of these to me and it is in mint condition still in box with tags. e-mail Jenn shortygal9@hotmail.com .
