It's all about race

Less than a day left for the American presidential election I had to write this to gather my thoughts. I guess when I said ‘sooooooooon’ I must have only meant less than 12 hours. Blog world moves fast after all.

This election is all about race. It’s unfortunate that the issue of Barack Obama being black has never been really discussed or made 'fun' of by comedians. Hear me out here.

McCain's age, Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin's gender were talked about over and over. Bill Maher and Chris Rock two of my favourite's comedians have been hammering on about how old McCain is. As much as I enjoy their jokes I believe all these social issues are important to talk about whether it’s in a form of comedy or academic dissertation.

Whether she is even competent enough to run for a vice-presidency is another issue but Sarah Palin possibly becoming the leader of the free world is not really out of question considering all female leaders we have in the current and past political landscape. Just to name a few:

German Chancellor, Angela Merkel
Prime Minister of New Zealand, Helen Clark
Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher

Simply talking about things does not bring drastic changes but it certainly makes people more aware and I reckon that is a good start.

I'm not sure if avoiding (?) the race issue has done any good for the Obama's campaign. Maybe Americans have been a little too polite to talk about the racial issue. Please correct me if I'm wrong here. I heard that people were likely to change their votes when push comes to shove after telling pollsters that they’d vote for Obama (aka Bradley effect). Will they really? I'm really nervous to find out whether we will be celebrating the 'change' or drinking some hard liquor out of despair these coming days.

It's a good thing then the style blogphere is nothing but diversity with all different races showing their beauty in their own way.

P.S. I don't know any male blogger who is black. Do you know anyone?

Update: Thanks, Susie. I found a black guy who is also a style blogger. Ian Brown. I couldn't find a decent picture of him but I really liked his post on Mad Men.

Funny you bring it up. Sadly, I believe that racist people do have a problem with Obama being African American. Personally, I have friends of so many ethnicities I hardly ever think about anyone's race. To me race is about as important as someone's hair color or the color of their eyes... not important at all.

Well everytime I see a political parody obama is always portraited as a black stereotype, however comedians haven't really exploited his race. you are right.

Great post Songy! It is time for women to change both the position, content and style of leadership...It's time to change our picture of what political leadership looks like...both race & gender... Thank God, we are almost-almost there I think. ;)

I've been hearing that comedians don't really like to make fun of Obama because . . . there's not much to make fun of.

As for people shying away from race jokes, yes, I think they are shying away, but again, I think maybe because . . . there's not much to make fun of.

I do fear that people will chicken out of "voting for a black man" when the chips are down, but I won't be one of those. I already voted. For Obama.

I have heard the same thing as Enc said, comedians don't find Obama as funny as they do McCain. I heard a comedian say that by voting for Obama she is getting rid of half her paycheck and half her material---but it is the right thing to do.

I fear that the "undecided" voter is really code for racist. I so hope I am wrong. I am voting for Obama. And, I hope this time tomorrow that we will know he is the next President. Until then I am a little worried.

I love the diversity of the blogsphere. So many unique perspectives. One of the best things about growing up and moving every three years was getting to see so many different types of peoples and knowing them all people. :)

Gotta echo enc's comments: I adore Obama and voted for him with tremendous glee. But I think he isn't parodied because there just isn't much to make fun of. Hopefully we'll see his quirks come out more after a year or two in the White House, right?

What an interesting post!!!
I'm all for diversity and I agree with Agnes, skin colour and racial details are just one thing like hair or eyes colour.
There are so beautiful people in all races.

And great pictures, but in this case I must confess that I have a fav... Matt of course, but for his personality.

as a person of multi racial person myself, i find it annoying that he's referred to as black, when he is of a mixed racial background.

but there a lot of prejudice being put towards obama, really malicious stuff. it really opens my eyes how far america still has to go.

i will say madtv has the best obama impersonator! my favorite keegan micheal key!
