Day 5 Perth Fashion Festival – 2008 Student Fashion Award

Posted by on Sep 10, 2008 in 2008, Perth Fashion Festival

The shows I attended during the festival so far have been very commercial and they were all organised by retail companies. Certainly I haven’t shown you any creative work. I am guilty of hoarding these images for good three days.

Mercedes Benz WA Student Fashion Award showcased interesting designs by aspiring student designers in four different categories – costume design, ready wear men/women and contemporary evening wear. As you would expect there were quite a few experimental designs. It was rather refreshing to see fantastical designs after days of what looked like an ongoing catalogue display on the catwalk. I wondered sometimes why famous designers would release unwearable and crazy stuff when they can’t really sell them. Could I dare say now that I totally understand? It is theatrical fashion shows that indeed inspire and entertain us. This wasn’t the first time for me to attend fashion shows but it was just then I realised how I appreciated the artistic form of fashion design. It was thoroughly enjoyable and laughable sometimes and that is exactly why I love fashion.

These are just tasters for you. We will find out who wins the award during the gala dinner at the Perth Convention and Exhibition centre on Friday 12 September. What is your favourite? We will find out if judges for the award share your view or not. I didn’t put all the pieces here. If you want to see more please visit my flickr album.

I’m kind of partial to the yellow dress in the last row, but I’d like to take away all the crystal action.

Some of the most and least wearable stuff we’ve seen from your fashion week photos. I’m digging the rose train dress.

I don’t mind the yellow dress, but agree with WendyB – that crystal embellishment is way too Disney princess. I’d probably actually wear the deconstructed grey marle mini though!

You never have to sell me on Fantasticalism; I love it always, especially when it’s not “wearable!”

I appreciate an artistic vision rendered with/through fashion, and these are wonderful examples.

Something else I appreciate is these models. They are real people, not sticks!

Yeah, theatrical designs are so much more fun. I hate when local malls have “fashion shows” and don’t even style the clothes – it’s so boring.

I love some of those students pieces!

i’m digging the grey mini dress, the gowns are close…and it’s so true about the craziness on the runway! it’s for the communication of ideas/creativity.

    Hi Songy ;)
Thank you so much for dropping by my blog and left such nice comment.

To be honest I also have seen your picture profile in some blogs and was always thinking that I should check your blog, but you know… time for me is always short, so I went on a delaying.

So glad that you made the first step. And I’m loving your blog.

    Keep in touch ;)

Beautiful. The last four images are absolutely fresh and adorably stylish. I want that little white dress with splashes of color!

You are so lucky to have been able to enjoy all of those shows, Songy. And we are lucky that you share the best of them with us. Thank you!
